Ray Rice, the "Wife-Beater" AND Adam Johnson, the "Cradle Rocker"

Adam Johnson

Image result for Ray RiceAdam Johnson is a player on Sunderland and was accused of having sex with a 15 year old girl last week.  Sunderland immediately suspended him and are currently waiting for the result of the trial before taking any other steps.

Why do you think this situation was handled so much better than all of the incidents that have been taking place in the NFL?

Ray Rice had an incident last season where he was caught on film in a hotel beating his girlfriend. Roger Goodell, the commissioner for the NFL took months before giving him a punishment.  For a second people thought he was not going to get in trouble at all. He was on the Ravens and they did not do anything either. In my opinion, I think that the Roger Goodell and the Ravens were hoping that the video footage would never be seen and therefore did not have to do anything. Once it was released Roger Goodell gave Ray Rice a life-long ban, but then Ray Rice overturned the ruling and was out for most of the season.

Why was this incident so difficult to handle and were the Ravens or Roger Goodell at fault?

  1. I don't think the incident should have been difficult to handle at all. There was clear cut video evidence of what happened, regardless of who "started" the altercation, hitting someone man or woman that hard, especially when you are an extraordinarily strong NFL player is unspeakable. The way Roger Goodell handled it was beyond awful. I definitely agree that the Ravens and Goodell were hoping the video never saw the light of day and that it could be swept under the rug.

  2. I agree with this above statement. This would not be difficult to handle. The video says it all and who started it doesnt really matter violence is 100% not okay, that is disturbing. The way it was handled was not okay and the fact that they thought it could go unnoticed is just wrong. I never understand how some athletes take on this bad PR of their own and think they can get away with it...

  3. 2 questions for Graham and Katerina: Do you think that Roger Goodell should have lost his job? Do you think the Baltimore team could have done more about this situation? I think the team is at just as much fault as Roger Goodell.

  4. I think it is definitely fair to put the Ravens to blame to some degree, but when it comes to a world famous league like the NFL, it is imperative that the leadership is very strong. I think Roger Goodell is a phenomenal commissioner who has done a lot of good for the NFL, and has drastically helped to improve its global image, but his inability to handle the Ray Rice situation in the proper manner could have toppled all the good work he's done to this point. Should he have lost his job? Debatable but I would ultimately say no. However, I hope that a serious lesson was learned, and leaders in other major sports will be able to handle these situations properly in the future.
